Project Name: Summer of Love 1967
by Beach College Academy
Director: Birdie Newborn (SL: Birdie Newcomb)
School: Beach College
SLURL: slideshow at http://slurl.com/secondlife/Montclair%20State%20CHSSSouth/11/139/21

Description: Our 4-month group project, Summer of Love 1967, was a recreation of the events and places in San Francisco, principally the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood and a bit of Golden Gate Park on Belle Isle. Purpose: to see what made this time and place such a turning point in American cultural history.

Six members of the Theme Team completed about a 12-block area, including the Fillmore Auditorium, Glide Memorial Church, Hippy Hill, bookstore, music store, theater, a semi-rural commune, a warehouse/dance venue, outdoor stage, firehouse (by a real fireman), SF Oracle office, hillside houses in SF style, a cable car.

The bookstore, music store and poster stand had links to books, music, and posters from 1967, the theater billboards showed 1967 hit movies, the "Second Francisco Oracle" gave out news of 1966 and 1967 (including the Vietnam War), and the Fillmore ran a week-long series of concerts (via YouTube) from the SF bands of the Sixties, while the outdoor stage did the whole three-day Monterey Pop Festival, mainly from original footage.

The site is gone now, but here's a slurl to a slideshow of our builds:
http://slurl.com/secondlife/Montclair%20State%20CHSSSouth/11/139/21

Enjoy.

Dave Schwartz, Ph.D. (SL: Benton Wunderlich)
Founder and CEO, Music Academy Online

Music Academy Online, www.musicacademyonline.com, is a real world entity. Our goal is to stimulate interest in Western art music. Our approach is interdisciplinary.

Since January 2007, Music Academy Online has been involved in the virtual world of Second Life and has been developing a "Classical Music Disney World." Our island, Utwig, includes areas dedicated to each of the time periods of music history, including Rosslyn Chapel for the Medieval Period and Lizzy Borden's house for the Romantic Period. We do have attractions, including an 'immersive environment' cave, "From Monkey to Mannheim," that presents an overview of early hominids and the first evidence of music making. One of our latest builds is the Philips Pavillion from the 1958 World's Expo in Brussels, the setting for Edgard Varese's Poem Electronique, and a 19th Century Literature Garden.

In May we held a festival, "Exploring Mahler," that was sponsored in part by Telarc International. Gustav Mahler and his music is an academic interest of mine and so it seemed logical. The response was incredible as many of the 900+ attendees gained renewed interest in the man and his music while others found a kindred spirit in a composer whose music had been unknown to them prior to our festival's events.

In August, Music Academy Online held its 2nd Annual Festival in Two Worlds. This 9-day event included lecturers, performers, composers, and artists from around the world, coming together to celebrate our ability to come together in the unique Second Life environment. This year's theme was "Virtuality" and our featured guest was award winning composer Amin Bhatia.

We just wrapped up a Toys for Tots Benefit Music Festival that saw SLers donate more than $900,000L for the children of New Orleans.

Along with classes, recitals, lectures, and live performances, we also host a weekly live show in conjunction with SLCN that features personalities from the world of concert music, "Music Academy OnLIVE." http://www.slcn.tv/programs/music-academy

Brad, welcome! When you get inworld, be sure to find your way to the center of the HQ building and click on the Docent Calendar (or click here: http://tinyurl.com/7x4yqq) to see when you might find an ISTE volunteer there to assist you. Even if no one is scheduled, there is a good chance you will find some folks to chat with. Looking for anything in specific? How can we help? -kj-

I like the "shade-tree machinima"...

Hopefully I can pick up machinima techniques soon to include in my SL/RL toolbox...
Mainly because, without video, SL/RL projects (read:paying projects) seem difficult to secure for developers like myself.

Adoption has been slow around these parts...

Hi Robin,

First thing I'd do would be to get in touch with the folks at your school who are responsible for the island. Chances are they are going to be your best hope of face to face support for your project. Next thing would be to join the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) in Second Life. It's free and will connect you with educators just like yourself. Finally, look up SLOAN-C in Second Life as well, they are also all about education, but for higher ed, and may be of help. Beyond that, get into SL yourself and start exploring! Good luck!
